Lunch & Learn Program
Beyond boundaries: Exploring careers and empowering dreams.
A common goal
Through this program, students can have small group discussions with professionals in various careers during their lunch and previous period class. Guest speakers are encouraged to speak about their personal experiences, challenges they have faced, what the reality of their field looks like, and what the next steps are for students interested in working in this field.
The Hijas del Campo Lunch and Learn program was created through a partnership between Liberty High School staff and Hijas del Campo, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving farmworkers and their families in Contra Costa and San Joaquin County. This school year 24/25, Hijas del Campo is bringing the program to Freedom High School.
These small group discussions will happen once a month and will culminate in a Career Exploration Event, which will take place in May of 2025.
Why it matters
As first-generation or migrant children, our worlds can sometimes be limited regarding exposure to different career paths. Career talks, mentoring, volunteering, and visiting job sites are all important in helping students make informed career decisions and see their potential to thrive in various work environments.
Breaking barriers
Students of campesinx parents often grow up with limited exposure to the full range of career possibilities, continuing cycles of limited opportunity and narrow expectations. This program helps break these cycles by broadening horizons, building confidence, and showing students that their background is not a barrier but a strength.
Career exposure
Connecting with professionals who share similar backgrounds can help students gain the clarity, inspiration, and support they need to pursue ambitious goals and thrive in careers they may have never imagined possible.
Parent engagement
This program actively involves parents, recognizing that their support is vital to a student’s academic and career journey. Parents will learn how to ask the right questions, encourage exploration, and support their child’s interests, even if those paths are unfamiliar.
The Goal
Breaking barriers by exposing students to a diverse range of careers and the paths people have taken to get there, connect them to potential mentors and build networking opportunities. As well as understanding the necessary steps to reach their goals.
