What We Do

INITIATIVES

Hijas del Campo curates culturally sensitive and fast acting responses to the evolving needs of our CampesinX community through a holistic approach that covers the areas of Education, Health, Food & Housing.

Education

  • Tech Support

For the past 3 years, HDC has partnered with Lenovo’s Hispanics of Lenovo Association (HOLA) to host a digital access event where 20+ students receive brand new Lenovo laptops each year. This program is critical to bridging the digital access gap and ensuring that the students we work with have access to the tools they need to thrive academically.

  • Lunch and Learn Series

Through this program, Liberty High School students are able to meet in small groups with professionals from a variety of backgrounds to learn about their careers. This program aims to expose students, especially those from farmworker families, to career paths they might not otherwise see in their immediate family or community.

  • Annual Back-to-School Drive

Every August, HDC hosts a Back-to-School drive that collects backpacks and school supplies for children ages 5-18. HDC has also been able to help a handful of college students, many of whom are working as farmworkers while they study, to purchase required textbooks.

Health

  • Contra Costa CARES

In January 2022, HDC’s CARES Coordinator, Lourdes Lozano began enrolling residents of Contra Costa County into CARES, a healthcare program for uninsured adults ages 26-49 who do not qualify for Medi-Cal or other public health insurance programs because of their immigration status. Through CARES, qualifying adults can receive preventative healthcare services free of charge.

  • Referrals Support Services

Whether clients need medical/dental/mental care, assistance finding a healthcare center, or applying for insurance, HDC is able to refer clients to the appropriate services by partnering with trusted clinics and organizations that are able to meet client needs regardless of language, literacy, immigration status, or income. In partnership with Contra Costa Crisis Center, HDC can also access a database of services throughout the county and make internal referrals to partner organizations.

  • Mobile Clinic

Beginning in February 2024, the Contra Costa Health mobile clinic will be coming HDC's headquarters every Tuesday to provide healthcare services to uninsured community members, assist in Medi-Cal enrollment and make referrals to additional healthcare, behavioral health and dental services.

Food

  • Despensa

The Despensa Program, provides food bags to 400+ farmworker families on a monthly basis. Each bag is tailored to the foods most commonly eaten by the families we work with, and often include essential household items such as detergent, soap, toilet paper and other cleaning supplies.

  • Storm Assistance for Immigrants (SAI)

SAI is a state-funded program that provides disaster relief in the form of cash assistance to undocumented families who did not qualify for other assistance after the California storms from December 2022 to April 2023. To date, Vilma Olivares, HDC’s SAI Outreach Advocate, has enrolled 1,000+ families with a current waitlist of 1,110+ families.

Housing

  • Casita Project

In 2022, Carondelet High Schools Engineering for Social Good Class constructed and delivered HDC’s first casita, which will house two farmworks for periods of two years at a time. Since the construction of the first CASITA, HDC has received $500,000 from the State of California to finance the construction of two additional CASITAS, thanks to Senator Steven Glazier.

  • Rental and Utility Assistance

After the COVID-19 eviction moratorium ended, HDC saw a spike in eviction rates among farmworker families, especially throughout San Joaquin County. For this reason, HDC provides emergency rental and utility assistance to families facing displacement or service shutoff. Over the last three years, HDC has been able to assist 75+ families, many of whom live with young children.

COVID RESPONSE

COVID RESPONSE

We’ve vaccinated 1,000+ Farmworkers and community members combined.

Hijas del Campo was born in a direct response to the unprecedented pandemic. We started our efforts by providing PPE and quickly evolved based on our families’ & communities’ needs. These efforts expanded to assist with everything from vaccination appointments & clinics, to food as well as bill and rental assistance for those who were/are unable to work due to Covid-19 and did not qualify for government stimulus or sick pay.

  • We Need You
